Floods can usually cause heavy damages to property and/or loss of lives at times. To minimize or contain these damages and losses, floods will have to be projected or forecasted. To project or forecast a flood, runoffs will have to be predicted. A clear relationship between runoffs and rainstorms will have to be established as a first step to predict runoffs. Rainfall and runoff appear to be directly and proportionally related. With all key parameters of hydrology and geometry considered, the relationship is in fact nonlinear. Hence, Fuzzy Logic 259 梁邏暴流 appears to be the exact tool for establishing the relationship between rainfall and runoff. The elements of crisp set are 0 and 1, being extremely binary, and no transition zone existed between 0 and 1. But the elements of the fuzzy set are infinite, being multidimensional and closer to the real world. Using fuzzy logic, this paper studies the pattern of rainstorm and runoff within a watershed.
