3 Life stories Objectives ■ To talk about personal experiences. ■ To revise strategies for approaching and understanding unseen reading texts. ■ To practise word building strategies (adjectives, nouns and adverbs). ■ To practise noun-adjective word formation. Resources used Cassette, Lexicon Possible problems Students with weak vocabulary may find the texts difficult and may lack the morphological knowledge needed for the vocabulary exercises. Background The texts are taken from Helen Keller’s autobiography The True Story of My life. Helen Keller (1880-1968) American author and lecturer, who became blind and deaf after an illness when she was nineteen months old. She began her education at the age of seven when Miss A. M. Sullivan came to be her teacher. Under the care of Miss Sullivan, Helen learned the deaf-and dumb language by touch and learned to read by the Braille system and to write using a special typewriter. In 1890 she also learned to read. She attended the Cambridge School for young ladies (1896-1900), where Miss Sullivan went with her to all classes and repeated the lectures and discussions by touch. Accompanied by Miss Sullivan, Helen then attended Rad-cliffe College (1900-1904) and graduated with honours. After graduation, she carried out her dedicated task to arouse public interest in the problems of the physically handicapped. She made many lecture tours, wrote several books and made one motion picture based on her life. After World War II, she visited American veterans hospitals and made many tours in Europe, Asia, and Africa, bringing her message of courage and hope to the handicapped everywhere. Helen Keller’s books include The True Story of My Life (1903), from which our texts are taken, The World I Live in (1908), Out of the Dark (1913), Midstream (1930), and Teacher (1955).
