Physical and leaching properties of ceramic tiles with black pigment made from stainless steel plant dust ·1 · Physical and Leaching Properties of Ceramic Tiles with Black Pigment Made from Stainless Steel Plant Dust Zhu Renbo, Ma Guojun, Cai Yongsheng, Chen Yuxiang, Yang Tong, Duan Boyu, Xue Zhengliang (Key Laboratory for Ferrous Metallurgy and Resources Utilization of Ministry of Education, Wuhan University of Science and Technology, Wuhan 430081, China) Abstract Stainless steel plant (SSP) dust is a hazardous by-product of the stainless steelmaking industry. It contains large amounts of Fe, Ni and Cr, and can be potentially used as inorganic black pigment in the ceramic tile industry. In this paper, the physical and leaching properties of ceramic tiles with black pigment using stainless steel plant dust as a raw material were investigated by considering the process parameter of sintering temperature, sintering time, addition ratio of pigment, mineralizer addition and compress strength of sample preparation . The results show that the good physical properties of ceramic tiles can be obtained with 8% pigments addition and sample preparation pressure of 25 MPa sintering at 1200℃ for 30min. The controlling leaching mechanisms of Cr and Pb from the ceramic tiles are initial surface wash-off, while the leaching of Cd, Ni and Zn from the product are controlled by matrix diffusion. The black inorganic oxide pigments, which shares about 25% of the inorganic pigment consumption, are often added into the ceramic matrix to color [1].
