North China Electric Pow er U niversity, Beijing 100085, China) ABSTRACT: With conventional ( PD) measurement technique, , t he tiny defects are difficult to be discovered in oil/ paper insula X tion system. T he partial discharge phenomena induced by Xray , X , / irradiation in transformer oilgap were investigated experimen , tally in this paper. It is found that PD activities in t he oilgap X w rapped by insulating materials are enhanced under Xray irra , diation, which could be associated with charge injection and , space charge distribution in the oil gap. Some free electrons , could come from the HV metal electrode by Photon effect at , , metal electrode surface w ith Xray irradiation, that is, free electrons in conductor could get energy from Xray photons to leave the metal surface. The oil gap formed betw een the elec : X ; ; trode and the w rapped cloths in the transformer model was : TM855 : A small so t hat the electrons escaped from the electrode surface w ere limited in the tiny oil gap.
