II.Course Description
This is an introduction course in communications that introduces the fundamentals of digital
signaling, coding, digital transmission and reception. The goal is to equip the students with basic
knowledge for design, analysis and comparison of digital communication systems and for the
physical layer of data communication networks including wireless networks and the internet.
III.Course Schedule
Week 1: Overview of digital communication systems:
Why digital, Typical Block Diagram and Transformations
Week 2: Signals and Spectra
Classification of Signals, Spectral Density, Autocorrelation, deterministic and random signals
Week 3: Signal Transmission through Linear Systems
Impulse Response, Frequency transfer function,
Week 4: Baseband Systems
Formatting Analog Information, Sampling, Pulse Code Modulation, Baseband Modulation
Week 5: Baseband Demodulation/Detection 1
Signals and Noise, Detection of Binary Signals in Gaussian Noise, Maximum Likelihood Receiver,
