It represents Hardys the highest achievement both in thought and art. In the novel, Tess is a pure, beautiful, kind, and nearly perfect woman. However the warm-hearted pure girl is finally put to death. This paper will mainly analyze the causes which are responsible for Tess’s tragedy from two aspects: the objective factors and the subjective factors. The objective factors include the social elements and family elements. Tess’s tragic life is a result of the society in the late Victorian era. Besides, it is related to her own character. The last part analyses women’s liberation though Tess’s tragedy.
