Flame Resistance Modification with Vinyl Phosphate onto Silk Fabrics GUAN Jin-ping1∗ CHEN Guo-qiang2 (1, 2 School of Material Engineering, Soochow University, Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, P. R. China, 215021) Abstract: A self-prepared novel vinyl phosphate (SFR-1) was applied to endow silk fabrics flame resistance property by grafting method. The paper mainly dealt with the optimization of grafting technique. The effect of initiator concentration, monomer concentration, reaction pH value and reaction temperature etc. was investigated. FT-IR spectra showed that SFR-1 existed on the silk fabrics after grafted onto silk fabrics. The reaction between flame retardant and silk mainly occurred in the amorphous region of silk fiber, which is confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. The effect of graft yield on flame retardancy has been investigated by the Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) value. Laundry durability of flame retardancy and char length of the modified sample were also measured. The paper also discussed the wrinkle recovery, tensile strength of the grafted silk fabrics. The result showed that SFR-1 grafted silk fabrics has excellent flame retardancy with LOI above 30%. And the grafted silk fabrics have better wet wrinkle recovery than control silk fabrics. But the treatment has a little effect on the whiteness of the silk fabric and the tensile strength of grafted silk fabrics slightly decreased; both effects are negligible.
