Abstract : This article outlines the three phases of the migration of the Chinese to Kolkata . It
suggests that the migration of the Chinese took place in three distinct phases : the nineteenth
century , when mostly skilled workers from China came to Kolkata seeking better employment ; the
early twentieth century , when social unrest and J apanese invasion brought Chinese refugees to the
city ; and the post1945 period , when civil war between the Kuomintang and the Communists
triggered the flow of a third wave of Chinese immigrants. In addition , the paper also examines the
