California Energy Commission – Tracking Progress Renewable Energy – Overview Advancing renewable energy is a key part of the state’s efforts to achieve Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr.’s Executive Order B-30-15, establishing a statewide goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030. 1 0F Senate Bill 32 (Pavley, Chapter 249, Statutes of 2016) (SB 32) put into law a statewide goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030. The companion bill, Assembly Bill 197 (Garcia, Chapter 250, Statutes of 2016) (AB 197) assures that the state’s implementation of its climate change policies is transparent and equitable, with the benefits reaching disadvantaged communities. As part of his vision to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the Governor called for California to increase to 50 percent the electricity derived from renewable sources by 2030.2 1F The Clean Energy and Pollution Reduction Act of 2015 (De León, Chapter 547, Statutes of 2015) (Senate Bill 350)3 2F put into law a requirement to serve 50 percent of California’s electricity use with renewable energy resources by 2030. To help support the state’s renewable energy goals and policies, the California Energy Commission provides this regular update of statewide progress toward renewable energy goals. This update opens with an overview of California’s progress toward the state’s Renewables Portfolio Standard, a summary of the amount of renewable capacity installed in-state, and a discussion of progress meeting the Governor’s goals for adding renewable capacity in California, with a focus on distributed renewable energy projects (projects close to where the energy is consumed).
