Spanish Translation Background: When the Native Americans were taken n to live in the missions, the difference in language made o it difficult for communication between them and the i Spanish-speaking priests. They were expected to learn s s the language in order to carry out daily rituals and to i learn the Roman Catholic religion. M Within a mission there were several different buildings h built to serve several different purposes. In one build- s i ing you might find Native Americans being taught the n Spanish language. Children and adults were expected a to learn the language in order to survive in the mission. p Only a narrow window lighted the rooms. S What To Do: a • Pretend you are a Native American trying to learn n the Spanish language. i • You are given blank paper, a pencil and copies from a Spanish dictionary. e • Using the dictionary pages, begin copying words in f i Spanish and then translate them into English. • Copy as much as you can.
