Czerwiec Abstract: Low temp erature p lasma assisted nit riding treatments of 316 stainless steel p roduce a comp lex lay er constituted by tow diff erent metastable f .c.c. solid solution denoted („ and „ ) . About thef ormation of these double lay ers, diff erent N 1 N2 hyp othesis was p rop osed in the literature. For verif y ing these hyp otheses, the eff ects of diff erentes conditions such as nit riding temp erature, cleaning and nit riding duration and cooling state have been studied. The results show that „ sub N2 lay er p roduce during the ion bombardment cleaning p rocedure, bef ore the nit riding treatment.
