Sociology of Symbols and Representation Julian Euell 331-20400 This course is a study of the network of meaning and significance that people, sharing the same language or set of symbols, have produced to organize their lives and to accomplish their purposes or goals. What is the basis for social reality? How is “what, where how and whom” believed and designated as author or authority related to the community in which we live? This course will be a combination of WebCt , discussions, and in class exercises using images, words, and other visual presentations TO STUDY OUR WORLD OF SIGNIFICANCE. Students will be encouraged to use two sides of their brains, the verbal and the visual in their work. Requirements: 1. Class exercises using drawings, collages and symbols/representations journal 20% 2. Reading and writing Students will choose from each section one of the books to read for her/his papers You will order your books from your favorite online bookstore, find them used or borrow them from the library. The other readings are very short from one or two paragraphs to three or four page exerpts that you will find online on our WebCt site.
