Environmental Ethics in Japanese Companies

Introduction
Japan has developed some environmental policies, including laws for restriction of industrial activities, e.g. the Waste Management and Public Cleansing Law; and the Law Concerning the Rational Use of Energy. Companies activities have a strong impact upon environment. It is simply because companies’ activities have a strong impact on environment. Although there are many investigations on companies’ environmental activities, little attention has been given to their views and ethics. Their ethical views should form the basis for planning of environmental policies related to companies. In order to examine the standpoints, ethics, and views on balances between management and protection of environment among Japanese companies a survey of company annual reports was made. This research also explores methodology and indicators on how to measure environmental policies of different organizations.
Method
Data were gathered from 300 randomly selected Japanese companies, which open their environmental report to the public, using both hard copies and internet versions. The main focus of the study was to determine 1. For what do they do environmental activities?, 2. Their standpoints on environmental activities; and 3. What is environmental activity from the aspect of management? Because we defined ethics in this study as something that they do to protect the environment and with what ideas they do environmental activities.
First an assessment was made of whether the company was conscious of environmental protection in its values. For 97% of companies (that is 290 out of 300) it was clear that the value of environmental protection was accepted.
