Harley-DavidsonTwinCamHeadsFlowBenchStudy Harley-Davidsonbeganmanufacturingthe88cubicinchTwinCamengineforthe1999 modelyearofsomeoftheir“BigTwin”motorcycles.Bythe2000modelyear,allthe “BigTwin”linewasconvertedtotheTwinCam(exceptCVOFXR’s). TheTwinCam engineplatformisstillbeingofferedbyHDtoday,onlynowtheengineisfactory availableasa96cubicinch. Thisstudywillprovidebasicreferencetoflowbenchdataandthecauseaffect relationshipbetweentheadditionsofnecessarycomponentstotheoverallflowpotential oftheTCcylinderhead. Pleasenote:thestudyisaboutflowpotentialonaflow measuringbench,notnecessarilythepowerorperformancepotentialofthosesame componentsonanothertestfixture(dynometer)althoughtherelationmaybethere(but that’sanotherstudy). Anotherimportantnoteisnotallflowbenchtests willcorrespondwithoneanotherwhen comparingflowsheets. Theintakeinletapparatus fortheintakeportandthepipe apparatususedfortheexhaustportcangreatlyaffectreadings. Someinformation providedinthisstudywasborrowedfromotherpublishedsourcestogivea“relative” readingtocorrespondtoactualtesteddataperformedbyDwightBarryofSyke Performance. AllthecomparisontestingbycomponentswastestedcourtesybyDwight BarryofSykePerformance(HTTtag:panheadred)andsharedwiththeauthorforthe benefitofthereader. Directconclusionsshouldnotbemadeinrespecttovalvesizeandflowpotentialrates basedontheinformationprovidedinthisstudyof non-stockconfigurations.
