Abstract:Three tunneling ethods in the saturated loess fortheproject of water transferringfro south tonorth of Chinaarenu erically tested and
discussed with the introduced Austria software FINAL.The nu ercial results de onstrate:(1)Tunneling with NATM (CASE A)is possible and
the 10+15 c shotcrete i ediately following the excavation is absolutely necessary ;(2)The interaction between two parallel tunneling caves
with a distanceof 2.5 ti es oftunnel dia eter can be ignored ;(3)Instead ofprojecting concrete support to strengthen the surrounding loess ofthe
tunnel, the traditional tunneling ethod(CASE B)in which the cast in sitelining syste is introduced to support theloess, is also possible for the
local si ple constructors, although the settele ents of the tunnel crown reached 141 ;(4)To reduce the tunnel settle ents, another tunneling
ethod(CASE C)with the precast lining syste constructed before the tunnel excavation, is uch better than CASE B with settle ents of
8.5 , although theprecast lining technics is uch co plex than CASE B.(5)All the feasible tunneling ethods are based on the effective
drainage of the water fro
