* 语言学 Linguistics Week VI Macro-linguistics Branches Bloomfield Definition Macrolinguistics is often defined as the scientific study of language in the broadest sense and is concerned with any branches of science other than linguistics per se. Macrolinguistics study often resorts to interdisciplinary approach, and, as a result of which, has given birth to a long list of branches and subbranches: sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, ethnological linguistics, anthropological linguistics, applied linguistics, clinical linguistics, stylistics, lexicography, mathematical linguistics, statistical linguistics (also: quantitative linguistics) and computational linguistics, etc. Sociolinguistics Sociolinguistics began to take shape in 60’s of last century, which employs the theories and approaches in linguistics and sociology for its own use. The primary task of sociolinguistics is to probe into the rules of language in social environment and describe linguistic variation.
