Th is co llection of particles forms a support ing skeleton and determ ines the ability of so il to resist shear stress, as described in the concept o f effective stress pro- posed by K arlT erzagh .i M any efforts have been m ade to apply this concept in engineering problems, rather than conduct ing m ore fundam ental invest igat ions on the geom etrical and m echanical propert ies of the so il skeleton. In the past wt o decades, the closely related discipline of granular matter m echanics has received much attention due to its various intriguing phenom ena. M any fundamental studies have prov ided a deeper understanding of granular matter. Based on our research on so il mechanics and granu lar matter in the last ten years, we propose that soil is intrinsically mu ltiscale, .i e. besides m icroscale prmi ary particles and m acroscale bulk matter it a lso consists o f m esoscale force chains.
