1.1Background of research
Since 1970s more and more researchers have turned their attention to languagelearning research from language teaching, they gradually realized that learners played animportant role in language learning and their individual differences have more effects onlanguage leaming.If language learners learn hoore effectively andrely less on their teachers, they language independently and thenbee more efficient language learners.Of all the individual differences, there are cognitive factors,affective factors andpersonality factors. These factors be regarded as the origin resulting in the different useof learning methods as ain reasons resulting in different learning effect.Among them, cognitive factors bee a hot issue ainconcern. Among multi-dimensional models of cognitive styles, Field dependent-independent model(shorten as FD/FI in this dissertation) is a hot issue and has draany scholars. FD and FI cognitive styles thecontent field.Independent college is the undergraduate higher education colleges, also called thesecondary college. pared to the students in first grade universities, the students inindependent colleges have e time, thereexist mixed groups of students e class.In this situation,teacher have many difficulties in their process of English teaching ? In along term, it at the same pace of beingteaching. Therefore, more and more teachers especially in independent colleges pay moreattention to the individual differences in their English teaching.

Nearly all the researches mainly took junior and senior school students, universitystudents,including English majors and non English majors,and adults as their subjects.
