Instructors: Daniel Weller Sharat Chikkerur MIT Course Number: 6.087 Level: Undergraduate Course Description This course provides a thorough introduction to the C programming language, the workhorse of the UNIX operating system and lingua franca of embedded processors and micro-controllers. The first two weeks will cover basic syntax and grammar, and expose students to practical programming techniques. The remaining lectures will focus on more advanced concepts, such as dynamic memory allocation, concurrency and synchronization, UNIX signals and process control, library development and usage. Daily programming assignments and weekly laboratory exercises are required. Knowledge of C is highly marketable for summer internships, UROPs, and full-time positions in software and embedded systems development. Syllabus This course makes use of Athena, MITs UNIX-based computing environment. OCW does not provide access to this environment. Course Meeting Times Lectures: 5 sessions / week for 3 weeks, 1.5 hours / session Labs: 1 session / week for 3 weeks, 3 hours / session Prerequisites This course assumes a basic understanding of the principles of programming. Prior knowledge of C is neither expected nor desired. The primary prerequisite of this course is 6.00 Introduction to Computer Science and Programming, 1.00 Introduction to Computers and Engineering Problem Solving, 6.01 Introduction to Electrical Engineering and Computer Science I, or another introductory programming course at MIT.
