Sierra Academy of Aeronautics IR Ground Lesson 1 Basic Attitude Instrument Flying Welcome to Instrument Ground In this course you will expand your current knowledge of aviation to become a knowledgeable and prepared instrument pilot. Attitude Instrument Flying Attitude instrument flying is the basic technique of controlling the airplane by reference to flight instruments. Two general methods are used for teaching attitude instrument flying: Control and Performance Concept Primary/Supporting Concept Attitude Instrument Flying (cont.) Control and Performance Concept Designates certain instruments as control and others as performance. Places more emphasis on attitude indicator Used primarily in turbine and airline operations Attitude Instrument Flying (cont.) Primary/Supporting Concept Regards attitude of the airplane as function of pitch, bank, and power control For given maneuver there are specific pitch, bank, and power instruments that should be used to control the airplane and obtain desired performance. Typically used for light aircraft training such as at Sierra. Attitude Instrument Flying (cont.) Primary Instruments: provide most pertinent and essential information.
