He grew up in the slums of London’s East End and led a dog’s life. His mother suffered so much that she became mad. His father died of drink. Both parents had been on the stage. They had lived in the hope that they would one day be “stars”, only to pass away with it harbored in their dreams. His future was uncertain, but he did not believe it could be unhappier than his past. By 1914, as expected, Chaplin became the most talked-about man in America, the king of silent movies. He was not only admired as a first-class actor and comedian, he also made his name as a director.  Chaplin was married four times all his life and had a total of 11 children. But he did not feel comfortable with his marital life until he married Oona O’Neill in 1943. His fourth wife gave birth to eight children. Chaplins marital life was full of scandal and controversy. One scandal occurred when Chaplin briefly dated 22-year-old Joan Barry. However, Chaplins relationship with Barry came to an end in 1942, after a series of harassing actions from her. In May of 1943 Barry returned to inform Chaplin that she was pregnant, and filed a paternity suit, claiming that the unborn child was his. During the 1944 trial blood tests proved that Chaplin was not the father, but at the time blood tests were inadmissible evidence and he was ordered to pay $75 a week until the child turned 21.
