When was it discovered? Who discovered it? What is the significance of finding this New Land to Spain? Significance of Finding the New Land Based on the discovery, the Spanish king could claim the territory in the Americas and later Spain conquered the new land and established a huge empire and grabbed enormous wealth from the Indians. Two immigration movements: The American continent were peopled as a result of two immigration movements: 1. 25,000 years ago, Siberian tribes to Alaska In search of hunting grounds or of refuge from pursuing enemies. 2. From 16th century, from Europe and Asia to North America, including Canada. In 1492, Columbus and his men landed on the New world. In 1497, John Cabot arrived in today’s Canada and the English king claimed the whole of the territory of North America belonged to England. Native American--Indians By 1492, over 10-20 million people inhabited the Americas. They were mistakenly called Indians by Christopher Columbus. Brilliant Indian civilizations: the Aztecs the Incas the Mayas The United States government recognizes five hundred sixty-two American Indian tribes. Most received this recognition from the Bureau of Indian Affairs. They proved through birth and death records that their groups have existed as different communities since the time the first Europeans arrived. Europe in the 16th and 17th Centuries Situations in Western Europe in the 17th century Europe was under the single authority of Roman Catholic Church. The feudal system of serfdom prevailed.
