The Britons The English people are of a mixed blood. The early inhabitants in the island we now call England were Britons, a tribe of Celts(凯尔特人). From the Britons the island got its name of Britian, the island of Britons. 最早居住在阿尔比恩（英国最古老的一种称谓）的土著居民大部分是凯尔特人。在英国人来该岛之前的将近400年里，不列颠一直是罗马帝国统治下的一个省。 罗马帝国在公元410年没落后，从阿尔比恩撤军。 生活在欧洲大陆的【英国人的祖先朱特人( the Jutes)、盎格鲁人(-the Angles)、撒克逊人( Saxons)】，形成一个新的部落，称为日耳曼人（Germanic people）,他们开始登陆该岛，征服并进行种族灭绝活动，导致了土著凯尔特人的几近消亡。 盎格鲁人(-the Angles)是日耳曼人中较为重要的部落，把阿尔比恩（英国最古老的一种称谓）改名为盎格尔兰德（Angle-land), 后来简称为英格兰（England）. 使用的语言是盎格鲁-撒克逊语(Anglo-Saxon)，也叫撒克逊语或古英语(Old English), 这一时期的文学通常称作古英语文学。 2. (strength and somberness)-----僧侣们用书面形式创作 3. Beowulf贝奥武甫 1. A general introduction. Poem of Old English Be termed as England’s greatest national epic 3182 lines Describes the deeds of the Teutonic (Germanic) hero Beowulf. Was written by an unknown scribe 被认为是英国现存最早、最完整的民族史诗，其主人公已成了英国人心中的民族英雄 全诗分为两部分: 第一部分讲述丹麦洛斯格国王( King Hrothgar) 修建的宏伟宫殿在前后十二年中被半人半魔的妖怪哥伦多( Grendel) 每晚骚扰，捉食洛斯格的战士。此时恰逢瑞典南部济兹( Geats) 王子贝奥武夫率家臣来访，欲帮助洛斯格国王除害。国王当晚设宴款待，妖怪哥伦多再次出现，捉食一名济兹战士，贝奥武夫与之格斗，扭断其臂，妖怪落荒而逃，因受重伤回到栖身的洞穴后死去。第二天晚上，哥伦多的母亲前来为其子复仇，之后贝奥武夫将其在一湖泊的洞穴中杀死。史诗第二部分描叙贝奥武夫返回本国，被拥戴为王，统治国家五十年，举国大治。最后贝奥武夫以垂老之年，杀一喷火巨龙，身受重创死去。
