It is good advice not to express yourself in too colloquial a manner while writing an academic essay. But, at the same time, this does not mean “the-harder-the-better”. If they misunderstand this, some students may go to extremes: they use words that are so obsolete, so obscure, so unusual that even native speakers have difficulty in understanding the meaning. Be aware that writing is not intended to find out how many words you have put into your head. But, it is designed to assess your sophistication and capability — as well as your flexibility in expressing your ideas in English. What is essential is that you write accurately, fluently, coherently and creatively. Remember the word “KISS” (keep it simple, stupid). Simple words can also have great meaning and “Brevity is the soul of wit”, to quote Shakespeare.
