Educated at St.paul school,then at Cambridge. After university, spent 6 years studying for poet. In May of 1638, Milton began a 13-month tour of France and Italy. In 1642, Milton returned from a trip into the countryside with a 16-year-old bride, Mary Powell. During the English Civil War, Milton wrote a series of pamphlets advocating radical political topics. Milton steadily lost his eyesight, and was completely blind by 1651. After the Restoration of Charles II to the throne in 1660, Milton was arrested as a defender of the Commonwealth, fined, and soon release In 1667, completing the paradise lost 1674, died shortly in Buckinghamshire, England. Milton invokes his Muse to inspire his tale to justify the ways of God to men.
