The Protestant Churches came into being as a result of a movement to reform the Catholic Church in the 16th century. The movement, known as the Reformation, led to the break between the Catholic Church and what came to be known as the Protestant Churches. Protestantism is the general name for hundreds of Christian denominations and sects that differs slightly or greatly from one another. About 380million people-about 7 percent of the world’s population-belong to these various groups. Among Christian bodies, only the Catholic Church has more members. The word Protestant comes from the Latin word protestants, which means one who protests. It was first used in 1529 for some German religious reformers who protested against the Catholic Church. The name soon came to include all of the western Christians who had left the Catholic Church. Most protestants live in the northern Europe and north America. A protestant denomination is the state religion of a number of nations, including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and the united kingdoms.
