Restate the chicken-or-egg question in relating to self-esteem to second language learning. Can you teach self-esteem? What can a teacher do with a student who apparently has very low self-esteem? Self-esteem is a personal judgement of worthiness that is expressed in the attitudes that the individual holds towards himself. Three levels of self-esteem General/ global self-esteem: common state of self-confidence, emotion and attitudes manifesting existed personal trait. Situational self- esteem: appraisals of oneself in certain life situations, relative discretely defined traits, personality traits. Task self-esteem: particular task within specific situation Chicken-or- egg question: Which did come first, chickens or eggs? The relationship between the high self-esteem and success in second language learning is complex. Provide optimal attention to linguistic goals and to the personhood of their student. too careful or ignorant , emotion Give some examples of the manifestation of inhibition. How might these inhibitions hamper language acquisition? In your own experience in language learning, have you ever been troubled by your own inhibitions? How can a person overcome those inhibitions? Inhibition means to build sets of defenses to protect the ego.
