Romanticism

Romanticism Background William Wordsworth I wondered lonely as a cloud. Percy Bysshe Shelley Ode to the west wind. Background Late 18th and early 19th century starting from the ideas of Rouseau in France and from the Storm and Stress Movement in Germany. The enlightenment brought about two revolutions and they caused Romanticism to rise: the French Revolution and the Industrial revolution. New economic ideas were put forward by Adam Smith in his book The Wealth of Nations, which laid the theoretical groundwork for capitalism. The Romantic Period (1798—1832) Contents Wordsworth’s poetry (1)抒情诗: 《抒情歌谣集》Preface to Lyrical Ballads 《丁登寺旁》 Tintern Abbey (2)长诗: 《序曲》 The Prelude (3)自传体叙事诗 : 《革命与独立》 《不朽颂》 《远足》 I wandered lonely as a cloud? That floats on high oer vales and hills,? ? When all at once I saw a crowd,? A host, of golden daffodils;? Beside the lake, beneath the trees,? Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.? Continuous as the stars that shine? The waves beside them danced; but they? Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:? A poet could not but be gay,? In such a jocund company:? I gazed--and gazed--but little thought? What wealth the show to me had brought:? Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1827) Comments 1. Shelley is one of the leading Romantic poets, an intense and original lyrical poet in the English language. 2. Shelley loved the people and hated their oppressors and exploiters. 3. He and Byron are justifiably (justly, rightly) regarded as the two great poets of the revolutionary romanticism in England. 4. Byron, his best friend, said of Shelley “the best and least selfish man I ever knew”. 5.Wo
