国家公祭日 英文介绍

A state memorial ceremony for the Nanjing Massacre is held in Nanjing, Jiangsu province on Saturday. The country grieves over the brutal tragedy that saw Japanese invaders take more than 300,000 Chinese lives in six weeks after they occupied Nanjing on Dec 13, 1937. During the 40-minute memorial ritual, the audience sang the national anthem, soldiers laid wreaths, and a 85-year-old representative of the massacres survivors stepped on stage with President Xi Jinping to pay tribute to the victims. Xi said that the Chinese people will remember history while cherishing peace and creating a better future. History Background After the July 7th Incident in 1937, Japan’s overall aggression of China was started. On 13 December 1937, the Japanese troops captured Nanjing City. With the connivance of and even the order by Iwane Matsui, Commander of the Japanese Central China Area Army, the Japanese troops committed war crimes of large scale massacre, looting, rape and arson against unarmed Chinese civilians and surrendered Chinese soldiers in Nanjing City and the surrounding areas. These crimes lasted for over six weeks. On Feb 27, 2014, Chinas top legislature approved two new national days, namely the Victory Day of the Chinese Peoples War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the National Memorial Day for Nanjing Massacre Victims, to commemorate Nanjing Massacre victims and all those killed during Japanese aggression against China. Victory Day: Sept 3 - the day after Japan officially surrendered in 1945; National Memorial Day: Dec 13 – the day Japan occupied Nanjing in 1937 and began a six-week massacre.
