Communicative language teaching (CLT) Contents Definition Principles Features The objectives of CLT Two major types of activities of CLT The advantages and disadvantages Conclusion Definition Communicative language teaching (CLT), or the communicative approach, is an approach to language teaching that emphasizes interaction as both the means and the ultimate goal of study Introduction The concept of communicative language teaching is originally created by Dwell Hymes. It first gained its popularity in Europe in the 1970s. Its theory is mainly from sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and Chomskys T-G grammar. It stresses that language is a tool for communication, to make use of it is the best method to learn it. It also stresses that the classroom should be student-centered, and students’ capability to communicative in foreign language should be mainly cultivated. To sum up, CLT is an approach which encourages students to communicate in class and finally helps them to use the language properly in different functions. Principles ---- activities that involve real communication promote learning ---- activities in which language is used for carrying out meaningful tasks promote learning ---- language that is meaningful to the learner promotes learning The features of CLT David Nunan lists five basic characteristics of Communicative Language Teaching: An emphasis on learning to communicate through interaction in the target language. The introduction of authentic texts into the learning situation. The provision of opportunities for learners to focus, not only on the language but also on the learning process itself. An enhancement of the learner’s own personal experiences as important contributing. An attempt to link classroom language learning with language activation outside the classroom. These five features are claimed by practitioners of CLT to show that they are very interested in the needs and desires of their learns as well
