Rebecca Introduction to the Author Daphne du Maurier (达夫妮·杜穆里埃 ):13 May 1907 – 19 April 1989 An English author and playwright. Her first novel, The Loving Spirit, was published in 1931 . Today, she has been re-appraised as a first-rate storyteller, a mistress of suspense. Her ability to recreate a sense of place is much admired, and her work remains popular worldwide. For several decades she was the most popular author for library book borrowings . The novel The novel Rebecca, which has been adapted for stage and screen on several occasions, is generally regarded as her masterpiece. One of her strongest influences here was Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bront?. Her fascination with the Bront? family is also apparent in The Infernal World of Branwell Bront?, her biography(传记) of the troubled elder brother to the Bront? girls. The fact that their mother had been Cornish(康沃尔郡的)saw no doubt added to her interest . Content Based on the novel by Daphne du Maurier, the classic psychological thriller Rebecca was Alfred Hitchcock‘s first American film. Joan Fontaine plays the unnamed narrator, a young woman who works as a companion to the well-to-do Mrs. Van Hopper (Florence Bates). She meets the wealthy widower Maxim de Winter (Laurence Olivier) in Monte Carlo, where they fall in love and get married. Maxim takes his new bride to Manderlay, a large country estate in Cornwall. However, the mansion’s(宽敞的房子) many servants refuse to accept her as the new lady of the house. They seem to be loyal to Maxim‘s first wife, Rebecca, who died under mysterious circumstances. Particularly cruel to her is the prim(一本正经的) housekeeper Mrs. Danvers (Judith Anderson), who is obsessed with Rebecca.
