Abstract In the video detection system of urban traffic flow, it is a hard work to detect veh icle at night. The traditional
m ethods are based on veh icle headlights and headlight beam s using m athem atical m orphology, they are sensitive to
environm ent illum ination w ith high compu ting cost. Th is paper presents a m ethod based on color and m otion inform ation.
Firstly, the algorithm detects and tracks veh icle taillights using color inform ation on the mi ages, then m atches the detected
vehicle taillights using motion inform ation and prioriknow ledge, finally vehicle flow is com puted. A s shown in expermi ents,
the algorithm can exactly detectm oving veh icles at n ight and it is robust to rainy conditions.
