China Coal Research Institute, Beijing 100013, China Abstract Based on the principle of effective stress and continuum mechanics theory, a pseudo-three-dimensional model with coupled stress and seepage fields is set up to predict sand production in weakly consolidated reservoirs. Then it is solved by the Galerkin finite element method with the sequential iterative algorithm. The problems such as automatic mesh generation for complicated geological area, deformation or failure of stratum, fluidized sand movement, dynamic sanding predication, etc. are simulated and investigated. The results show that stress around the wellbore and perforation tunnels will redistribute along with failure of the formation and sand production; the reservoir parameters are influenced by the complex sanding and stress changes; the volume of sand production will fluctuate and this phenomenon is consistent with field and laboratory observation.
