What does he mean by negative overtones What are specialists and generalists? “Our firm started on Wall Street in New York in the late 60s. It was therefore very strongly a financial services and banking organization. Today, slightly less than 50% of our business comes from financial services, and the rest comes from a wide range of industries, so as a firm, we’ve become generalists” What is the aim of his job? “my job is to engage their interest and persuade them their might be some alternatives” What kind of people are they looking for? “loosely defined it as either senior management, main board directors, divisional directors, heads of functions such as sales or marketing, finance or systems” Where are potential clients often taken? “Sometimes, Yes, sometimes we take them to the Ritz! The problem with the Ritz is that it’s full of headhunters!” What is the ‘craft’ and ‘art’ of headhunting? “the real craft of a headhunter is knowing how to find out who’s around, and that means talking to what we call ‘sources’. That means phoning people up, people you know, sometimes even people you don’t know, and engaging them in conversation on the telephone and trying to persuade them to give you the names of people who would match the particular specification” Does he view his job as ethical? “I think I would justify it on the basis that we are not ‘stealing individuals’. We are merely presenting them with opportunities.
