To our surprise, the thing happened to him. 【拓展】表“碰巧”，主语通常为“人”，常用结构 happen to do sth. “碰巧做某事”，可与 It happens/ happened + that 从句互换。 e.g. The reporter happened to be her classmate. = It happened that the reporter was her classmate.
