The pro- posed channel simulator can easily be designed, and its statistical properties are in good conformity with the underlying physical (mathematical) radio channel model. Our simulator is based on a finite sum of weighted harmonic functions with determined frequencies and phases (Rice’s sum of sinusoids). It is shown, that the occurrence of a frequency hop in the physical channel model corresponds to an exchange of determinated phases in the simulation model, whereas the other simulation model parameters remain unchanged. For all parameters of the simulation model simple equati- ons in closed-form are given. Moreover, the performance of the proposed channel simulator is investigated for typical frequency hopping mobile radio data transmission scenarios. INTRODUCTION Frequency hopping combined with error protection techniques and interleaving is known to be very efficient in combating chan- nel fading. It results in near-Gaussian performance even over ho- stile Rayleigh fading channels [1]. For the GSM System (slow) frequency hopping is an optional feature for each individual cell. The principle of (slow) frequency hopping GSM is that the carri- er frequency is changed with every TDMA frame. By this means, frequency hopping adds frequency diversity to the mobile radio channel [2].
