Australia: From Penal Colony to “Free Migration” Week 10 British American Society Colonization of Australia Previously we talked about the Land Peoples of Dreaming Affect of colonization But, not all British people came to Australia freely Some came as “free” settlers But some of the earliest British settlers were “convicts” *House Question* What is a convict? Someone guilty of a crime; sent to prison. In the case of Britain in the 1800’s – convicts were sent to Australia (penal colony) *House Question* What is a penal colony? A prison at a remote location Port Arthur Penal Settlement in NSW Australia as a Penal Colony British settlement in 1788 Established as separate British colonies New South Wales (NSW) Tasmania Queensland (QLD) Western Australia Victoria South Australia First period of colonization from 1788-1830’s Based on “un-free” labor of convicts NSW, QLD, Tasmania = Convict Colonies Victoria South Australia = “Free” Colonies Western Australia Started as a free colony But in 1850-1869 = convict colony Australia as a Penal Colony First Generation of Native-born Australians Most were non-Aboriginal Born raised by convicts As well as some non-convict families Many people in Britain believed Australia would become a very bad place because convicts were reproducing– and the children will also one day become convicts However, many children raised by convicts become good, moral citizens Family Life in a Convict Family 18th century Britian Transition – families moving from rural life to urban life Penal colony also had changing values 1788 – colonial workforce = convict labor Men greatly outnumbered woman 1788-1830’s Wives of convicts tried to go with their husbands to Australia Most requests were denied Wives left behind in the UK = deprivation, even death for them and their children Family Life in a Convict Family *House Question* This is a picture of a convict ship that went to Australia in 1791, what is the name of this ship?
