Delving into the Essentials: Debates of Fundamental Issues onArchitectural Journal, 1954-1959 ABSTRACT Most authors ofArchitectural Journal in the 1950s focused on macroscopic issues such as ideological struggle and economical development. However, debates on design specifications, and architectural standards as seen in collective housing designs in particular constituted the fundamental part of the emerging domain of architecture in the PRC. Despite neutral and technical discussion, traditional lifestyle and experience were incorporated into mass production characterized in modern architecture, connecting specific concerns with macroscopic issues. The incorporation exposed intrinsic contradictions between them, and formed the necessary basis for future research and development of the discipline.
