Poetry General Survey of the 20th century poetry: The century began with Thomas Hardy, first volume of poetry. His poems represented traditional rural poetic tradition. Yeats, T.S. Eliot became the representatives of modernist poetry. Left –wing poets led by Auden appeared in the 1930s. Welsh poet Dylan Thomas represented the return to the theme of Romanticism. In the 1950s, the movement poets led by Lartin(拉金) ，wanted to find a middle position between modernism and traditional poetic forms and styles. Technical Revolution in poetry: In the early years of this century, a major technical revolution occurred. ( Yeats, Eliot, Pound) were the leaders modernist poetry. What were the influences on modernist poetry? Imagism (意象主义) Metaphysical poets of the 17th century especially from John Donne. French symbolic poetry. Imagism: The body of theories of a group of anti-Romantic and anti-Georgian British and American poets(1912-18) who aimed at simplicity and detachment in poetic expression by the clear presentation of visual images. T. E. Hulme formulated the ideas, and also wrote a handful of poems. Ezra Pound took up Hulme’s ideas for a time and became the leading poet of the movement.
