The optimal viewing distance can be changed by setting up a prism array instead of changing the parameters of the display. The theoretical formula to determine the optimal viewing distances are deduced and prism array structure is designed. The parameters of the prism array are optimised. Introduction Autostereoscopic display based on parallax barrier is one of the important autostereoscopic displays [1–5] and it does not require any glasses or helmet attachments when people watch it [6,7]. So the parallax barrier display can give the viewers comfortable experiences [8] and is becoming the frontier of display technologies. Compared to the other types of autostereoscopic displays, the parallax barrier display is a mature display [9,10]. Only at the optimal viewing distance, the best viewing results can be obtained. The problem is autostereoscopic display once fabricated, the optimal viewing distance cannot be changed, which restricts its applications.
