New Trends of Leisure Consumption in China Xiangdong Yin Hunan Academy of Social Sciences ABSTRACT: This paper described new trends of leisure consumption in China. KEY WORDS: culture consumption; entertainment; leisure consumption. The state of a country’s lifestyle is very much related to its degree of opening up to the outside world. After more than 20 years of reform and opening up-, the Chinese people’s value on consumption gradually modernized, which can be considered as a preparation for changes in lifestyle. In her further development, China will be more open to the outside world. Many Chinese people have generally accepted Western lifestyle and as a result, their consumption becomes more individualized. This creates an external environment for a new type of lifestyle. The economic development accompanied with the rise of life’s standards, including more leisure time, provides a physical basis for a new leisure lifestyle. All of these factors collectively indicate that leisure consumption will change considerably. What Do the Chinese Want to Do at Leisure Time? A survey on allocation of time conducted by professor Wang Qiyan of Renmin University of China shows that for urban households, the weekly averages of work time per day is 5 hours 1 minute; the time required for personal life is 10 hours 42 minutes; the time for homework is 2 hours 21 minutes; the time for leisure is 6 hours 6 minutes (Wang, 1999).
