Oral English A - Shanghai Ocean University Initial Assessment Instructions 1. Students may choice between options A (a regular lesson), B (a regular lesson), C (a provided topic), or D (chose their own topic). You only need to pick one. 2. Each student should prepare for the oral examination over the next week. For the next class the student should be present at the time assigned on the attached schedule and be prepared for the evaluation. A. Those choosing option A or B should be able to answer the questions provided at the bottom of the essay in English and in full sentences, when requested by the instructor. It is recommended that the student prepare the answers before the start of the class. Notes will be allowed, but the teacher may note extreme dependence upon notes, and may take that into account in the grading. The student should know the material to the extent that they may enter into a discussion on the material with the instructor going further in depth into the original questions, or be able to address new questions. If the student wishes he or she may start the session with a short presentation/monologue on the essay. B. Those choosing option C or D should start the scheduled evaluation period with a 60 to 90 second presentation on the topic. The rest of the period will be spent on a discussion on the topic with the instructor or with answering questions on the presentation by the instructor. It is recommended, but not required, that those choosing option D give the instructor some prior notice of the topic. 3. Usually those picking option C or D do the best gradewise. I believe that is because they have picked a topic for which they are interested; it is easiest to talk in English when you are interested in what you are talking about. Option A and B are for those that cannot think of a topic. 4. At four and one-half minutes, the student will be cut off. The student should exit as quickly as possible. 5.
