Climate Britain’s climate is often thought of as cool, wet, cloudy, and windswept(强风的).This generalization(判断,总结), however, fails to take account of(考虑到,注意到) the many regional(局部的,地方性的) variations (变化)in weather, or the microclimate(小气候) that are found all over the country; it is also a fact that , increasingly, global warming appears to be blurring (使模糊) the distinctions of the seasons, especially the autumn (fall)—winter –spring period. The British weather overall(总体上) is controlled mainly by a series of depressions(低气压) from the Atlantic that move across or pass near the British Isles (大不列颠群岛)on account of (因为)the prevailing(盛行的) southwesterly wind. Talking About the Weather Given the considerable variations in Britain’s weather both regionally and historical, it is so surprise that there is a great deal of “weather talk” among the population. Take the year 2000 for example, which began with the sunniest(阳光最充足的)winter in English and Wales since 1909, followed by the wettest April since 1766, when records began. Parts of Scotland and North Ireland then had the driest July since 1929, before October saw rainfall(降雨量) records broken throughout the country. The fall turned out to be the wettest for England and Wales since records began, continuing into the spring of 2001. Historically, there have been many recorded “freak”(古怪的)conditions. For example, on January 21, 1661, Samuel Pepys recorded in his diary: “It is strange what weather we had all this winter; no cold at all but the ways are dusty(布满灰尘的), and the flyes(苍蝇)(“flies”的古体) fly up and down, and rose bushes(灌木丛) are full of leaves…” On the other hand, on a few accasions, such as in 1683 and 1771, the River Thames泰晤士河(Thames River)是英国著名的“母亲”河。 has frozen, providing an unexpected arena(活动场所) for
