Workshop on Translating Interpreting Contents Summary 1 Missions and Objectives of the Workshop 2 Reasons for Interpreting and Translating Being Incorporated 2 Courses Offered at the Workshop 3 Textbooks Adopted for the Workshop 6 Internet-Aided Instruction 7 Other Functions of the Workshop 7 Faculty of the Workshop 7 Qualifications to Be Admitted to the Workshop 7 Summary The Workshop on Translating Interpreting (hereinafter referred to as “the Workshop”), drawing inspiration from the Translation Workshop in UCLA initiated by the late UCLA distinguished professor and renowned translator Michael Heim, is an intensive course offered to students who are interested in enhancing their translating and interpreting skills, dedicated to preparing themselves for various translating and interpreting tests and competitions, and aimed at improving their overall English language proficiency. The Workshop is a practicum, much more focused on practice rather than theory. It would be following the format of “problem-solution” throughout every session of the Workshop. And every session would be student-oriented, meaning that students would be playing a rather active role in the interactive sessions. Students enrolled in the Workshop would be assigned to do some particular exercises (both translating and interpreting) before every class. They would have to bring their assignments to the class and talk about the problems they have encountered—including what are the problems, have the problems been solved by themselves, have they had similar problems before, what do they think contribute most to the problems, and how can they do to improve themselves to stamp out such problems. The Workshop plans to offer a class lasting 2 hours every week, possibly on weekday nights. The class on interpreting and the class on translating would be held consecutively, meaning for example the class on interpreting would be held this week, followed by the one on translating next week which in turn
