Effective Reading Strategies
In this age of information, your great difficulty in reading is that you have too much to read. So, you first need to select from massive information what you really need to read. However, after your selection, you may find that you still have too much to read. So you need to read quickly. But when you read quickly, you may miss the important points. So you need ways to find the main points in the text accurately. In reading, you may also find some sentences or paragraphs express meanings in an indirect or implied way, so you need to make inferences from implied meaning. The following strategies are regarded as critical in effective reading:
Skimming and scanning: Quickly glance through a document to get a general idea of the content.
Identifying structure and hierarchy: Determine the genre and content arrangement by reading both the verbal and visual elements.识别结构和层次:通过识别文字和图表成分来确定体裁和内容安排形式。
Distinguishing main points: Differentiate important from unimportant ideas.
Drawing inferences: Understand the implied meaning of information and reflect on the effect of the implication.做出推断:理解信息的含蓄意义并考虑暗示的影响。
Skimming and Scanning浏览与找读
Before carefully reading sentences, paragraphs, tables and graphs of a document, you should do skimming and scanning first.
Skimming浏览或略读
Skimming means to go through the entire document very quickly. The idea is to get an overall sense of what is in the document and where it is located. You should usually begin reading a document by skimming. The following strategies help you skim effectively:
For a book: Looking through the preface, the table of contents, and the index to get an overview of the content and a sense of the scope and approach.翻阅目录、前言和索引以获得对内容的概观以及对文件范围和使用方法的总体印象。
NOTE: Many students often get down to reading a book without glancing the preface or contents. After two or three chapters, they only find the book is not suitable for them, and thus they waste time and energy.
