We should listen to the material as a whole, at least sentence by sentence, not word by word. 2. Before listening or during the time between two dialogues or monologues, we should read the questions and their choices as quickly as possible, and keep the important information in your mind to prepare for the test. 3. We should also gain some knowledge of the culture and customs in English-speaking countries because language and culture are closely related. 4. We must take notice of the intonation of the English language. The same sentence may have different meanings in different tones. 5. We ought to know what to give up and what to focus on. If we have some trouble in one item and we think it over and over again, it will have a bad effect on the other items following it. In order to improve our listening, we should also grasp some other listening techniques. (T) I. Find out key words and sentences Finding out key words and sentences plays a very important role in English listening, especially in dialogues. 1. Numbers (1)Numbers and calculation are quite common in listening examinations. When we do exercises about numbers, we must not only catch the numbers clearly and write them down, but also pay special attention to some special words, such as: more, less, early, late etc, and take notes of them and calculate them quickly. For example 1(1): Q: What’s the correct time? A. 11:33 B. 11:30 C. 11:27 From “correct”, “eleven-thirty” and “three minutes slow”, so we choose A(11:30+3=11:33).
