Middlemarch (米德镇的春天/米德尔马契) Author summary of the story Characters Themes My own opinion George Eliot 1819-1880 (乔治·艾略特) Mary Ann Evans (22 November 1819 – 22 December 1880; alternatively Mary Anne or Marian), better known by her pen name George Eliot, was an English novelist, journalist, translator and one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. She is the author of seven novels, including Adam Bede (1859), The Mill on the Floss (1860), Silas Marner (1861), Middlemarch (1871–72), and Daniel Deronda (1876), most of them set in provincial England and known for their realism and psychological insight Her father was a capenter who rose to be a land agent.When she was a few months old,the family moved to Criff,a cheerful red-brick,ivory-covered house and there Eliot spend 21 years of her life among people that she later depicted in novels. George Eliot was educated at home and in several schools, and developed a strong evangelical piety at Mrs.Wallingtons School at Neneaton.However, later Eliot rejected her dogmatic faith.When her mother died in 1836,she took charge of the family household.In 1841,she moved with her father to Coventry, where she lived with him until his death in 1849.
