In order to create a plug of pulp to seal the heating zone from steam leakage (blowback) it is designed with a conical shaped screw. The outlet is equipped with a flange connection so that the pulp plug is pushed immediately into the next coming machine, the shredder. To prevent the pulp to rotate along with the screw body, guide bars are installed in the conical part of the screw housing. Due to the plain bearings it is possible for the plugscrew to slide together with the preheater extension during the heating up of the machines. The screw is supported by two spherical roller bearings only at the inlet end and at the outlet by means of the pulp plug itself. The drive consists of a gear coupling attached to the gearbox with the motor above. By means of the V-belt drive, there is the possibility to optimise the speed, by sizing the pulleys. Attached to the drive, a slow speed switch ensures that all kind of disturbance will activate the interlocking chain for the machine. For bearings and drive refer to lubricating instructions later in this section. The screw has to be changed or repaired approx. every second or third year depending on the pulp quality. The Guide bars have to be replaced at the same time. To replace/repair the screw the drive unit must be removed. To find out whether the screw is worn out or not, you should be looking at approaching problems with high motorload or problems with pulp feed and steam blowback.
