Every link must be kept permanently in contact with other links by a mobile connection, which is called a kinematic pair (joint). * Links Links: one or a group of elements that have independent motion. * 1: shank of connecting rod 2: bolt 3: nut 4: cap of connecting rod 1 2 3 4 Kinematic pairs (joints) A pair element: the part of the link surface which makes contact with another link and forms a kinematic pair. A lower pair: if two pair elements of a kinematic pair have surface contact or its equivalent. A higher pair: if the connection takes place only at a point or along a line.
