The Landsat Project began in 1972 Originally ERTS (Earth Resource Technology Satellite) Developed to demonstrate the usefulness of remote sensing data for land and resource applications. The Landsat Project is a joint initiative of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), NASA and others to gather Earth resource data using a series of satellites.
